Located in northern, Scandinavian Europe in the North and Baltic seas, Denmark encompasses the Jutland peninsula and 407 islands in the seas (only 79 are inhabited). One of the oldest states in Europe, Denmark has retained its independence since the 10th century, after becoming united, Christian nation under Harald Blatand. Once a thriving Viking region, Denmark still maintains its place as a principal port in Europe and leader in European politics. Denmark’s government operates under a constitutional monarchy, which is under direct and seemingly unchecked power of the monarch, who appoints the Prime Minister and other government positions. However, in actuality, the monarchy is ceremonial, and the prime minister is chosen by party leaders, and the monarchy doesn’t even cast its right to vote.
Copenhagen, the capital city, brings in millions of tourists every year to view the beautifully colored houses along canals, thriving port, and rich history. The rest of Denmark, like Arhus, presents beautiful landscapes with a feel for what life was like in the Danish market town.
